NOTE: Story by your editor (remotely written). This event was not held in 2020 or 2021 --CARLOS FERNÁNDEZ CANET.

(02-Apr) -- After nearly a three year wait because of the pandemic, runners once again took to the streets of the Czech capitol for the Sportisimo Prague Half-Marathon this morning, the first event of the 2022 SuperHalfs Series of half-marathons.  In cold and windy conditions, Kenyans Keneth Kiprop Renju and Nesphine Jepleting got the wins collecting USD 5000 each in prize money.

"I really liked the race, I enjoyed it a lot," Renju told race organizers after running with a long-sleeve shirt under his Nike singlet to keep warm.  He continued: "The weather caught me by surprise, I didn't expect it to be so cold. The worst was the headwind, which made it really hard in some moments."

Renju had to shake off strong challenges from three Kenyan compatriots --Philemon Kiplimo Kimaiyo, Bernard Kimeli and Mathew Kipkorir Kimeli-- who were all with him at the 10-K split of 27:52.  The same four were together through 15-K.  Renju was only able to break away after crossing the Manes Bridge over the Vltava River which takes the runners to the finish in Old Town.  He won in 59:28.  Kimaiyo got second in 59:33, Mathew Kipkorir Kimeli third in 59:46, and Bernard Kimeli fourth in 59:59.

"Despite the conditions here, it was fast," Renju said.  "A world record may fall here."

In the women's race, Jepleting and compatriot Irine Cheptai --who was second at the United Airlines NYC Half just 13 days ago-- broke away from the field early and ran most of the race together.  The pair hit the 10-K mark in a swift 30:50, and were still together at 15-K in 46:59.  But by 20-K Jepleting had an 11-second lead and won in 1:06:57 to Cheptai's 1:07:16.

"I could run faster, but it was too cold and windy," Jepleting told race organizers at the finish.  "During the race, I doubted I could win. But the mental strength, my head, helped me. In the group we ran until the twelfth kilometer, then we accelerated as we wanted."

The course records of 58:47 by Atsedu Tsegay of Ethiopia (2012) and 1:04:52 by Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya (2017) were never threatened.

In seventh place the former Ukrainian runner Sofiia Yaremchuk, who now represents Italy, ran a personal best of 1:09:09 and said she carried Ukraine in her heart as she ran today.

"I ran for Ukraine and for all the people and men who are fighting in Ukraine," she said.  "I want to tell everyone that Ukraine does not want war, the whole world does not want war, we all want peace.  I'm happy because I have my new record and I finished with the Ukrainian flag."

NOTE: Susanna Sullivan, who lives in nearby Reston, Virginia, was the big winner here.  She became the first "local" runner to win the race since 1982, and enjoyed both a big personal best (52:32) and a $14,500 payday (details below).  "I mean, it's huge," said Sullivan of winning as a local.  "Everybody knows what Cherry Blossom is. I'm a 5th-grade teacher so, you know, a lot of the time my running means nothing to them, or not nothing but they don’t really get it. But a lot of their parents run this race and I saw some of them out on the course, and so if I tell them I won Cherry Blossom that will mean something."  Men's champion, Nicholas Kosimbei of Kenya, tied Allan Kiprono's 2012 course record and won $8000.  "My style is to take the lead early and never look back," said Kosimbei who split the first 5-K in 13:59 and led from gun to tape.  He won by 28 seconds over compatriot Wilfred Kimitei --Ed.

Therme Manchester Marathon (40th)
Trafford, GBR; Sunday, April 4
Distance: 42.195 km; World Athletics-certified and record-eligible
Finishers: 58 in elite race + 13,866 in mass race
NOTE: A great day for the New Balance Manchester Team led by coach Steve Vernon.  His athletes Jonny Mellor and Ross Millington went one-two in the men's race and are now well positioned for 2022 Commonwealth Games or European Championships selection.  Mellor ran 2:10:46, the third-fastest time of his career, and Millington made his debut in 2:11:38.  The qualifying time for England for the Commonwealth Games is 2:14:00 and for Great Britain for the European Championships is 2:14:30, so both men were comfortably within those standards.  Irishman Kevin Seaward likely secured his place for Euros with his 2:11:54 in third place.  On the women's side Becky Briggs won by a wide margin in a big personal best 2:29:09.  Her time was well inside the 2:34:00 English standard for the Commonwealth Games, and she could also be selected for Euros for Great Britain --Ed.

Stanford Invitational
Palo Alto, CA, USA; April 1 - 2
Cobb Track and Angell Field
Summary of Middle & Long Distance Events
NOTE: There was a lot of good running and great depth at this huge, two-day meeting, but the highlight has to be  Natalie Cook's USA high school record of 15:25.93.  The high school senior from Flower Mound, Texas --who is headed for Oklahoma State University in the fall-- bettered the mark of 15:34.47 by Jenna Hutchins set in December, 2020.  Also of note, University of Arkansas senior Lauren Gregory made her 10,000m debut and won in 32:34.21 --Ed.
